The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is Scotland's leading conservation charity caring for both the nation's built and natural heritage. Receiving no direct Government finance NTS, founded in 1931, is separate from The National Trust covering only England, Wales and Northern Ireland. NTS has 127 properties covering 76,000 hectares including mountains (16% of Munros and 4 of the 5 highest), upland footpaths, coastlines, islands, wildlife, birdlife, gardens, historic sites, castles and cottages and all their contents. These are looked after permanently for the access and enjoyment of all people. The continuous care of this diverse heritage representing so much of the best of Scotland requires a substantial amount of voluntary donated time and money. There are 260,000 members (including corporate members), 2,500 volunteers and around 2 million visitors annually as well as many who have made gifts or legacies to support the Trust's work generally or in specific properties or projects.
